BANTAM BOYS WORKOUT #2 There will be a second open workout for any male softball players interested in trying out for the 2012 Bantam Boys (under 16) Provincial Fastpitch Softball Team. The team that is selected will represent the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2012 Bantam Boys Eastern Canadians in St. Croix, Nova Scotia from August 23-26, 2012. This Time It’s Official… Men’s Softball Returning To Canada Summer Games In 2017! Great News for Softball!!! History of Softball at Canada Summer Games Softball has been included in the Canada Summer Games since the inaugural event held in Halifax/Dartmouth in 1969 as a mixed sport (male and female). Starting in 1981, the sport was split into a male and a female category. Strikeout For Men’s Softball For 2009 Canada Summer Games Despite many efforts to keep the male category on the program, it was decided to drop the male component of the game for the 2009 Canada Summer Games, but the female category remained included. Debby Power NL Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Softball Newfoundland & Labrador would like to announce that Debby Power has been selected for induction into the Newfoundland and Labrador Sports Hall of Fame. The Sport NL Stars & Legends Awards Gala will be held on Saturday, April 14th, 2012 at The Sheraton Hotel Newfoundland in St. John’s. This year’s event will be Co-Hosted by Jonathan Crowe (CBC News: Here & Now) and Jamie Korab (Real Estate Agent: RE/MAX). Debby Power (Hall of Fame Inductee) Outer Cove athlete Debby Power had an outstanding athletic career in Softball, Ball Hockey and Ice Hockey. Debby’s exceptional pitching and batting ability on the softball field led to many awards and accomplishments throughout her years of competition. Debby represented Newfoundland and Labrador at thirteen National Softball Championships; however, the 1981 and 1982 Championships proved to be her most successful. Following her team’s 1981 Bronze Medal win at the Canadian Junior Softball Championship Debby was invited to a National Team tryout camp. At the 1982 Canadian National Softball Championship she won the batting title with a .600 batting average, was voted MVP and set a record for most runs batted in during one game with eleven. 2012 NL Bantam Boys U16 Provincial Team Tryouts

2012 NL Bantam Boys U16 Provincial Team Tryouts Tryouts for the 2012 Newfoundland Bantam Boys (U16) Provincial Softball Team will begin on Sunday, March 25th, 2012 at Roncalli Central High School in Avondale. The gym session will run from 4:00 to 6:00pm. Male athletes born in 1996 or later are eligible to tryout and those selected will compete at the 2012 U16 Eastern Canadian Tournament in PEI in late August, as well as other Local and Provincial events throughout the 2012 season. Athletes selected to these programs will be expected to make a commitment to indoor training until the end of May, at which time training and competition will move outdoors and continue until the end of the softball season. Interested players are strongly encouraged to attend all tryouts. Once the tryout process begins information on future tryout dates and other expected participation will be communicated through an email list to individual athletes as well as on the Softball NL website. The cost to tryout is $30.00 (non-refundable) due at the athletes initial tryout. Passing of Mr. Joe Antle

Softball Newfoundland & Labrador is saddened to learn that Joe Antle passed away on Friday, March 2nd, 2012. To Joe’s family and friends, our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Softball Newfoundland & Labrador On The Field Joe Antle’s playing career in the Senior Softball League span 13-years from 1957 to 1969. He was a member of the 1965 Comets team that captured the Senior League Title and was a member of the 1967 St. John’s Capitals team that captured the Provincial Senior Men’s Championship. The 1967 St. John’s Capitals were the first St. John’s team to accomplish this feat. Off the Field Joe served on the St. John’s Senior Softball Executive for 7-years: 1962 as Treasurer, 1964-66 as an Executive Member and 1967-69 as Vice President. Umpiring Joe served on the Metro Softball Umpires Association Executive for one year in 1975 as 2nd Vice President and was an active member of the Metro Softball Umpires Assoication for 6-years from 1973 to 1978. Hall-of-Fames; All-Decade Team Joe was elected to the Softball NL Hall-of-Fame in 1973, to the St. John’s Softball Hall-of-Fame in 1986 and was named to the Senior League All Decade Team Catcher (1957 to 1966) at the 50th Anniversary Celebrations in 2006.
