New LTPD Committee Chair Appointed

LTPD Committee Chair – Noreen Murphy FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 26, 2013 Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) Committee Chair (Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Noreen Murphy (Saskatoon, SK) has been appointed as the new chair of the Long-Term Player Development (LTPD) Committee. Softball Canada would like to thank Don Bates who recently stepped down as chair for his years of service. Don was a tremendous champion of LTPD and greatly assisted in ensuring LTPD principles were upheld in all of Softball Canada’s programs and services. Noreen, born and raised in Toronto, was involved in many sports, including softball and was recruited to play for the Harmony Centre Women’s Softball team from Saskatoon who went on to play in four provincial championships between 1980 and 1984, winning a Gold medal at the Canadian Senior Women’s Championship in 1980. She also represented Canada at the European Championships in 1980 and at the World Games in 1981. She moved to Lloydminster with her job and began her coaching career. In 1985 and 1986 she coached the Lloydminster Midget Girls to back-to-back gold medals at the Canadian Midget Championships. She was named Alberta’s Minor Coach of the Year in 1986. In 1987 she moved back to Saskatoon and began an eight year stint coaching Lorne’s Lazers, taking the team from midget to junior and then to senior at the national...

SC National Director of Umpires

Softball Canada To Seek New National Director of Umpires   Thursday, April 25, 2013   (Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada announces that Brian Van Os has decided to retire from the position of National Director of Umpires, a position he has held since 2008. Throughout his tenure, Van Os was at the helm of the Officiating Development Committee (ODC) and oversaw many great advancements within the officiating program. He will continue to serve as Softball Canada’s National Director of Umpires until the completion of his term on October 1st, 2013.   Van Os became a registered Softball Canada umpire in 1981. He was both a Fast Pitch and Slo-Pitch official throughout his umpiring career. He has also been involved administratively with Softball British Columbia and Softball Canada since 1985, serving in numerous different positions. He was involved in umpiring at the international level from 1986 to 2001, including the 1988 ISF Senior Men’s World Championships and the 2001 ISF Junior Men’s World Championships. He served as Softball BC’s Umpire-in-Chief from 1989 to 1997 and later joined Softball Canada’s Officials Development Committee (ODC) in 2002, notably working on the evolution of the rulebook and offering rule interpretations to the umpiring community.   He also served as Deputy Umpire-in-Chief at the 2009 ISF XII Men’s World Championship in Saskatoon, SK, and will hold the same position this summer at the 2013 ISF...

Since we spoke in January (regarding clinics) a new Skill Development opportunity has developed. NL 3Cheers Pub Senior Men’s Fastpitch team has developed spring camps/clinics for minor kids that are members of Softball NL. We are extremely excited about these clinics and we encourage all associations to drum up interest. We realize associations have many strong coaches and dedicated volunteers helping teach the game of softball and we thank them for all their efforts. However, the opportunity that NL 3Cheers Pub is offering to Softball NL members is one that is like no other in the country. Press Release Monday, April 15th, 2013 Softball NL 2012 Award Winners Softball Newfoundland Labrador held its Annual General Meeting & Election of Officers on Saturday, April 13th, 2013 at Holy Cross Elementary School in St. John’s. The following 2012 Softball NL Awards were presented at the AGM: Umpire of the Year, Coach of the Year, Minor Female Player of the Year, Minor Male Player of the Year and the Bob Whelan Memorial Award. Softball Newfoundland Labrador would like to Congratulate all of the 2012 Award Winners.  2012 Umpire of the Year: John Sullivan (St. John’s, NL) Acted as Deputy Umpire-in-Chief of Softball Newfoundland Labrador in 2012. This past season, he took care of helping schedule umpires for all of the Provincial Tournaments and was responsible for the finances of each tournament and made sure that all umpires were looked after. Excelled as an umpire throughout the 2012 season, mostly in the Senior and Intermediate Men’s Fastpitch Leagues, where he umpired approximately 80-games. In 2012, he umpired at seven (7) Provincial Tournaments including: Senior Men’s, Midget Boy’s, Midget Girl’s, Bantam Girls, Pee-Wee Girls and Squirt Girls and one Eastern Canadian Tournament. Volunteered at the Constable William Moss Memorial Softball Tournament when his work schedule permitted. Volunteered at the NL Summer Games in Carbonear when time permitted. Press Release Monday, April 15th, 2013 Softball NL Board of Directors (2013-2015) Softball Newfoundland Labrador held its 2013 Annual General Meeting & Election of Officers on Saturday, April 13th, 2013 at Holy Cross Elementary School in St. John’s. The following individuals have been elected or re-elected for a two-year term that will run from April 2013 to April 2015. Paul Smith Sr. was elected as President, Ross Crocker was elected as Vice-President, Bill Barron was re-elected as Finance Director, Gerald Gosse was re-elected as Secretary, Sherry Maher was re-elected as Minor Director, Geoff Evely was elected as Adult Director and Eddy McDonald was re-elected as Eastern Canadian Director. Paul Smith Sr. becomes just the 10th President in the 50-Year History of Softball Newfoundland Labrador. Before taking over the President’s position, Paul Smith Sr. served as Finance Director from 2009-2010 and served as Vice-President from 2011-2012. Ross Crocker did not seek re-election for the President’s position, but did accept the nomination for the Vice-President’s position. Crocker is a member of the Softball NL Hall of Fame (1996), the Sport NL Hall of Fame (1997) and the Softball Canada Hall of Fame (1999) and served two-terms (four-years) as President of Softball NL from 2009-2012.
