Whipple Reappointed

Whipple Reappointed as Softball Canada’s National Director of Umpires for Third Term Published by Gilles LeBlanc Published on March 30, 2017 (Ottawa, ON) Softball Canada is pleased to announce that Jeff Whipple (Fredericton, NB) has been reappointed as Softball Canada’s National Director of Umpires for a third term that will run through the 2019 season. Whipple took over the position from Brian Van Os in 2013. Under Whipple’s direction, the Officiating Development Committee (ODC) has focused its energy on improving opportunities for umpires through their Umpire Program Review Committee (UPRC) initiative, examining every aspect of Softball Canada’s world-class umpiring program including the increased use of technology and a focus on umpire education. “I am fortunate to have the support of such a great team on the ODC and very capable leadership in each province and territory” said Whipple. “Our program has consistently produced highly successful elite umpires and our goal is to maintain that success through maintaining a strong domestic program. The priority over the next few years is to focus on continuing to build an inclusive program that values the potential in everyone, including youth and females.” Whipple started umpiring in 1986. After officiating at four Canadian Championships, he received his Level V and WBSC certification in 1997, and subsequently officiated at two WBSC World Championships (Junior Women, Taipei, 1999; and Women, Saskatoon, 2002). He has served as Umpire-in-Chief (UIC) or Deputy Umpire-in-Chief (DUIC) at...

RBC Training Ground

RBC Training Ground – NL Sports Centre Regional Host 2016 was an inspiring and exciting year for Atlantic Canadian athletes at all levels – from local clubs all the way to the Olympics. We are so proud of the talented athletes coming from our region, and can’t wait to see what the future will hold. There is an exciting development and funding opportunity for athletes across Canada, called RBC Training Ground, and St. John’s has been chosen as one of the locations to host a regional qualifying event. Through RBC Training Ground, athletes will execute a series of workouts in front of various national/provincial sport organizations and their results will be measured against performance benchmarks to help identify those athletes who show the greatest potential. The four key areas to measure are – power, speed, strength and endurance. From each local qualifier, participants will be identified, based upon their athletic performance, to attend the regional final where up to 100 athletes will perform in front of national and provincial sport organization officials. We want to make sure that all of our talented Newfoundland Labrador athletes have an opportunity to participate in the RBC Training Ground program, and we hope that you will share this information with your athletes and encourage them to register for the regional qualifying event on April 15.
