Game Review

Team Canada edged Argentina 2-1 in 9-Innings at the ISF XIII Men’s World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand.

3B Bryan Abrey (2-3, RBI) led the way offensively for Canada, while 2B Brandon Horn (1-3, Double), CF Mathieu Roy (1-4, R) and LF Brad Ezekiel (1-4, R) each chipped in with hits.

Don Scott started the game on the mound for Canada. He went two innings, gave up one run (earned), surrendered three hits, no walks and fanned two. Paul Koert came on in relief in the third inning. He went 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, surrendered just one hit, no walks, hit one batter and fanned six. Sean Whitten (1-0) came on in relief with one out in the 6th inning. He went the rest of the way and picked up the win in 3.2 Innings of scoreless relief, surrendered one hit, no walks and also fanned six.

Argentina took a 1-0 lead in the Bottom of the 1st Inning. Fernando D’Agostino led-off the inning with a single, advanced to second base on a Pablo Montero sacrifice bunt; Pablo Montero out 1-4 on the play, With 1-Out: Bruno Motroni grounded out 4-3, Fernando D’Agostino advanced to third base on the play and With 2-Out: Gustavo Guerrinieri singled to score Fernando D’Agostino from third base.

The score remained 1-0 in favour of Argentina through 6-complete innings of play.

Canada managed to tie the game in the Top of the 7th Inning. Brad Ezekiel led-off the inning with a single, Stephen Mullaley grounded out 4-3, Brad Ezekiel advanced to second base on the play, With 1-Out: Ian Fehrman struck out and With 2-Out: Brad Ezekiel advanced to third base on a wild pitch and Bryan Abrey singled to score Brad Ezekiel from third base.

Canada would push across the eventual game-winning run in the Top of the 9th Inning. Courtesy Runner Mathieu Roy was placed on second base to start the Top of the 9th Inning (ISF Tie-Breaker Rule), Jeff Ellsworth reached on an error and Roy scored from second base on the error.

In the Bottom of the 9th Inning Courtesy Runner Mariano Montero was placed on second base to start the Bottom of the 9th Inning (ISF Tie-Breaker Rule), Mariano Montero advanced to third base on a pass ball, but Sean Whitten settled down and retired the side in order when Francisco Sabati struck out swinging, Nicolas Bittor grounded out 5-3 and Mauricio Caceres grounded out 6-3 to end the game.
