St. John’s Athlete of the Year Awards Winners Announced

The 2014 St. John’s Molson-Coors Awards were handed out Wednesday night at the E.B. Foran/Greene Room at City Hall.

Softball’s Sean Cleary was named Male Athlete of the Year, while Soccer was a double winner, as Malorie Harris was named Female Athlete of the Year and Memorial Women’s Soccer Team was named Team of the Year.

MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER: SEAN CLEARY (SOFTBALL)

Sean Cleary: Cleary helped pitch 3Cheers Bud Light to its third straight national senior softball championship, earning MVP honours. He was also  named MVP of the St. John’s league and provincial tournament.

Finalists: Clark Bishop (Hockey), Josh Hancott (Powerlifter) & Ben Taylor (Air Rifle Shooter).

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER: MALORIE HARRIS (SOCCER)

Malorie Harris: Harris was leading scorer at the national Jubilee Trophy senior women’s soccer championship. She was MVP in the Breen’s Jubilee Women’s Soccer League regular season and playoffs while winning the scoring race with 31 goals. She was also a first-team league all-star.

Finalists: Heather Healey (Baseball) & Jessie Noseworthy (Soccer).

TEAM OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER: MEMORIAL WOMEN’S SOCCER TEAM (SOCCER)

Memorial Women’s Soccer Team: The Sea-Hawks beat No. 1 seed University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds 3-1 to win the AUS  women’s soccer championship in Halifax. It was the first AUS soccer title for the women’s team.

Finalists: Brad Gushue Rink (Curling) & 3Cheers Pub Bud Light (Softball).
